Dhrti Yama - Calm Constancy

Thank you! Hope you have a peaceful day

There are 10 Yamas and 10 Niyamas - yogic take on human values and ethical practices that help us reach our full potential for personal, spiritual, and professional growth, and to liberate us from the repetitive cycle of suffering. When we live in contradiction to the highest values, when we avoid taking the higher road -  we get stuck in a rat.

This month, we invite you to align your life with the value of determination and consistency using the profound tools of yoga practice and holistic wellness. Dhrti (pronounced like ‘deerty’) is the value of firm determination and perseverance toward our purpose against all challenges.

calm constancy June at Glow

The practice of constancy in action is using our wisdom, and perseverance to foster peace and wellbeing of all. Whether it is your life's vision you're achieving step by step, or fighting for equality and justice in your community, staying calm and consistent is key to seeing your vision through. Often, when we are impatient to see the results as fast as we falsely desire, we sell out of the stock market, we quit our fitness dreams, music lessons, language school, education, relationships... you name it.

Running Glow now for 13 years I've been so lucky to witness our members getting stronger and more graceful as they move from their 30s to 40s, from 50s to 60s, and from 60s to 70s. Perseverance and a decade of regular practice made them superhuman; by our regulars, I am inspired every day! One of the best things I see is that our students seem to have an immense amount of positive energy and keep climbing new heights in their lives with wisdom and gratitude. The slow and steady does it. Life is a heck of a journey friends, and yoga gives us the attentiveness we need to truly master it. Dhrti gives consistency to our character and our actions.

Calm constancy helps us establish and keep our boundaries with grace, commit to our purpose, and build our confidence and faith in the greater good. Success is INEVITABLE when we embody this Yama.  See the silly TV feature of 99-Year-Old Yoga Teacher Dancer Tao Porchon-Lynch who started dancing competitively in her 80s and has received almost 600 first place awards, or interview with 100-Year-Old Skier George Jedenoff from the East Bay who embodies this yogic value. When we embody calm constancy, we avoid self-sabotage, which supports our mental health. When we embody calm constancy, the whole universe supports us and opportunities will be opened to create ease and flow.

'This year, at almost 85 - I made 3 movies! I left show business a long time ago, and made a comeback at 65, that doesn't happen. Here is how I got 'lucky' in my late career: I stayed healthy and fit! I've always worked out, and I ate healthy - these things tend to send 'luck' your way. I'm old, but I've remained YOUTHFUL: I have a good posture, a good attitude, and I've stayed curious. Luck is preparation meets opportunity. You have to be prepared to 'seize' the occasion.' - Jane Fonda

How will YOU apply calm constancy to your life this month? this year? your whole life?  Please contemplate it from every angle possible.

I look forward to seeing you in classes this month where together we will continue to cultivate calm constancy on our mats. Please join us in looking at Perseverance from different angles.
